Team USA wheelchair basketball two-time gold medalist
to be inducted into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame
Team USA wheelchair basketball player John Boie, who won two Paralympic gold medals, will be among the class of inductees for the 76th anniversary induction of the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame presented by Network Health on July 8.
The much-anticipated induction ceremony will be held at the Marcus Performing Arts Center in downtown Milwaukee, with a pre-event reception beginning at 5 p.m. The inductees will be honored at an awards ceremony beginning at 7 pm in Uihlein Hall.
The Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame, founded in 1951, was created to preserve the legacy and history of sports and athletic achievements in the state. Past inductees include Vince Lombardi, Hank Aaron, Donald Driver, Bob Uecker, Barry Alvarez, Brett Favre, Jordy Nelson, Oscar Robertson, Al McGuire, Bonnie Blair and Ernie Johnson, Jr.
Boie, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, was a key member of the Team USA wheelchair men’s basketball teams that won a gold medal in Paris in 2024. Boie also helped the American team win the gold medal at the 2023 Parapan American Games in Chile and has a gold medal from his Paralympic Games debut in Tokyo in 2021.
His other hardware includes a silver medal from the 2018 world championships, a gold from the 2022 world championships and a gold from the 2019 Parapan games.
Boie learned the game playing on multiple Wisconsin-based wheelchair basketball teams over the past 20 years, including the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks — one of the premier college wheelchair basketball programs in the nation for men and women. UW-Whitewater captured three national championships during his collegiate career.
"We are excited to celebrate John Boie for his incredible accomplishments,” said Brian Lammi, Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame co-owner. “You can't talk about the success of wheelchair basketball without talking about UW-Whitewater and John has been a long-time standout of the program with incredible determination and resilience. We look forward to honoring him as part of our 76th anniversary.”
Boie began playing wheelchair basketball at age 11 after attending a summer camp at UW-Whitewater.
"Being inducted into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame is an incredible honor,” Boie said. "I'm deeply grateful to the coaches, teammates, family, and community who has supported me through my entire wheelchair basketball career, from Madison to UW-Whitewater and Team USA. This recognition belongs to all of us!”
Boie joins retired Green Bay Packers CEO Mark Murphy and Milwaukee soccer legend Bob Gansler in the 2026 class of inductees. The final inductee for the 76th anniversary of the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame will be announced over the next several weeks.
