Roland "Rollie" Fingers

Inducted in 2023

Roland “Rollie” Fingers is one of the most iconic relief pitchers in Major League Baseball history, known for his dominance on the mound, signature handlebar mustache, and pioneering role in defining the modern closer position. A native of Steubenville, Ohio, Fingers began his professional career with the Oakland Athletics, where he emerged as a key member of a historic dynasty. His ability to control games in late innings quickly set him apart as one of baseball’s most reliable and intimidating bullpen arms.

Fingers enjoyed his greatest success in Wisconsin after joining the Milwaukee Brewers in 1981. That season, he delivered one of the most remarkable performances ever by a reliever, becoming the first relief pitcher in MLB history to win both the American League Cy Young Award and the Most Valuable Player Award. Despite the season being shortened by a players’ strike, Fingers’ impact was undeniable, as he anchored the Brewers’ bullpen and helped elevate the franchise into a contender during the early 1980s. Over his career, he recorded 341 saves and was selected to seven All-Star teams.

Beyond statistics and awards, Rollie Fingers’ legacy lies in his lasting influence on the game of baseball. He helped legitimize the closer role as a critical component of championship teams and became one of the sport’s most recognizable figures. Inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992, Fingers’ induction into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame honors his extraordinary contributions to the Milwaukee Brewers and his enduring place in Wisconsin sports history.
